Steve Perryman MBE – Career Biography
Steve Perryman MBE is a legendary figure in English football, renowned for his exceptional career as both a player and a manager, and for his enduring contributions to the sport at all levels.
Born in Ealing, London, on December 21, 1951, Perryman joined Tottenham Hotspur as a youth player and made his first-team debut in 1969 at the age of just 17. Over the next 17 years, he would become one of the most respected and dedicated players in the club’s history.
As a midfielder and later a defender, Perryman displayed remarkable consistency, commitment, and leadership. He holds the all-time appearance record for Tottenham Hotspur, having played 854 competitive matches for the club, including 655 in the Football League. He captained Spurs to numerous victories, most notably the UEFA Cup win in 1984, and back-to-back FA Cup wins in 1981 and 1982.
Awarded the MBE in 1986 for services to football, Perryman transitioned into coaching and management with success. He held managerial roles at clubs including Brentford, Watford, and Shimizu S-Pulse in Japan, where he played a pivotal role in developing the club’s structure and footballing culture. He later served as Director of Football at Exeter City, where he helped guide the club through an impressive period of resurgence.
Throughout his career, Perryman has remained a tireless ambassador for the sport and a passionate supporter of football at the grassroots level. In recognition of his lifelong connection to fans and the community, he was named Honorary President of the Swindon Spurs Supporters Club in 2025.
This appointment reflects both his enduring bond with Spurs supporters and his continued dedication to promoting the club’s values across generations.
